That poor girl. This kind of incompetence is unbelievable. Her family must be distraught beyond belief.

And I agree. Surely it's at least criminal negligence or gross negligence causing serious bodily harm. That would be jail time here. And a massive compensation payout.

I hope the family gets some kind of justice. Awful.

The SABC and me

Recently, I drove into a petrol station to buy something from the convenience store, and at the same time, an SABC car parked next to me. An elegantly dressed woman entered the shop ahead of me, and natural curiosity prompted me to ask why she was here?

Well. It was as if I had slapped her with an old cold haddock. Just passing through, she snapped at me. All righty then. Obviously my usual attire of jeans and working shoes offended her, especially after I said I was from the local newspaper. Of course my back is up now, and I'm feeling all defensive and stuff. So as I follow her ramrod stiff back out the shop I say to her that it's okay, she can report on the area, I don't mind.

Yes, I know, I was looking for trouble...

Virtually scampering by now in her elegant black pumps to escape me, I heard this thrown over her shoulder: "I'm not a junior reporter, I don't do local stories."

Excuse me?

This time it was the cold old haddock and me. I could only stand there flabbergasted. Then I became angry. There is little more important than the woman who has damaged a bumper driving over a pothole, or street lights burning the whole day, or erosion in our parks or pupils who do really well (or are really naughty!)

Or loud church music or an empty swimming pool. Or the myriad other stories that have real impact on your lives. The cliché in the industry is that community newspapers are the Cinderella of the Fourth Estate. I am quite happy to maintain the status quo, because it means that while some would dismiss you, you'll always have a home at community newspapers.

Quotable: The power of the periodical press is second only to that of the people.

This is the second poem this week I've read that strikes images of the confessional poets. It's both feeling and unfeeling once, but not in a crude way. Such is life.
